Have you ever heard about this mystical sequence? Yes? Then pat yourself on your back. Astronomically the most amazing math ratio humankind ever encountered, which is denoted as the greek letter Φ (Phi). A simple number purposeful that our whole universe would bend to its whims.

Curious to know what exactly is that, let’s dive deep into an amazing quantitative relation.

In Simplified terms :

It’s a golden rectangle, where the height of the rectangle Is 1 & width is 1.16.

Why Exactly 1.16? for that, we need to go into history. It has been claimed that some ancient greek architecture had a pentagram structure. I.e As you can see there are different colored lines.

If we took those lines ratio to each other we came with a ratio of 1.16 every time. Wonderful right? Some traces of this old discovery are also found in the book “Divine proportion” written over 500 years ago.

Another trace of golden ratio i.e 1.16 came from Fibonacci sequence. Where we get number 1.16 as output when we successive divide each term with the previous term of this sequence. i.e

We can spend the whole day in the mystery of these numbers. How it evolved & how it incorporated in our old books & structures but to make it easier to understand let’s talk about how it surrounds us.

When you study nature, you will find that nature has flourished with this 3, 5, 8, 13 (Fibonacci seq.) number seq. There is a whole new symphony out there. You can check out here.

Beauty with Math

Mathematics is a study of patterns, with math we can solve wonders of mystery in a defined manner. It motivates us to unreveal secrets which excites our minds & this is the magic of Fibonacci seq. With its application to defining the Golden spiral. GOLDEN SPIRAL Yes ! you heard it right,
Let’s suppose boxes of each number of Fibonacci seq. & put it with another this is how it would looks

& now a centerline out of those magic number as this

This is how thing became more fascinating & interesting this curve is what our solar system planet system arrangement is

& not to surprise to get a curve related to our ears’ structure. But it doesn’t stop there, as humankind dig deeper & ever-growing curiosity we found that, from the alignment of our planet system to the curve of your ears, astronomically it also presents our DNA (double-helical) structure to our heartbeat rhythm. These are signs indicating that we are hardbound with this ratio which connects us with nature & beauty around us.

As we came near the end of this never-ending subject I would like to show you how humans identified & implemented this awesome proportion in our daily seeing object & their use cases.

Some Uses Cases:

Artists, Painters & Scholars know that symphony of this ratio, That is why they created such wonders in the world. They know how to incorporate these magical numbers in their famous artwork like Taj Mahal, Mona Lisa, etc. here are some use cases I found during my study of this.

In Design Layout:

It’s an application in print & design projects for making the Logos, websites, UIs, etc. Many designers create golden ratio grids that are easy to work with.

In Beauty :

There is a secret behind every perfect face in this world, yes, you guessed it right, the golden ratio. Here is the secret. A golden layout mask. Artists know how to manipulate facial features to make them look perfect & appealing.

In Composition:

Another reason to love this ratio is it helps in defining the perfect composition for painting or for the shot to capture the moment in the most captative way.

Hope you will get more familiar with the ratio now, Want to know more? Feel free to contact me. I’d love to connect with you.
